Get away from it all (without going anywhere)

Getting away from it all doesn't have to mean a trip to the Bahamas. Even when taking a vacation just isn't possible, you can always find little ways to escape.

You might already have a special way of relieving stress, such as taking a bubble bath or listening to soothing music. Or perhaps you enjoy a glass of wine before dinner. Whatever you enjoy, the important thing is to forget your everyday concerns. Here are some suggestions that are guaranteed to help you feel better:

  • Even if you think you have no artistic abilities, expressing yourself creatively can really help ease your tensions. Put on your favourite CD and dance around the living room. Write in a diary. Or sit down with some paper and crayons and play with the colours.
  • Sometimes, the best way to relieve stress is by telling someone about it. Call or e-mail a friend and let loose with what's on your mind. Maybe you can even organize a get-together.
  • Schedule a massage. Many spas and health clubs offer this service.
  • Nothing works better than a little pampering. Put on your comfy pajamas, light a scented candle, and brew some herbal tea. You’ll sleep much better.

By finding meaningful ways to relax and escape stress, you can become happier, healthier and more satisfied in all areas of your life. Give it a try!

Try something new – it's never too late

Sometimes a new hobby or pastime can help you find the balance you're looking for. Taking a class is a great way to get away from the daily pressures of work and family life. Plus you’ll enjoy watching your skills develop.

You might start with an adult education class at your local community centre, college or university. Learn to speak a language or prepare healthy food, dabble in the art of origami or experiment with watercolours. You can learn at your own pace while surrounded by adults who are also trying something new.

Or if you want to try a new physical activity, see our Activity features for some easy ways to get started.

Want to learn, but you're convinced it's too late to start? Don't you believe it. Famous folk artist Grandma Moses began to paint in earnest at the ripe old age of 65. Celebrated poet Anne Sexton didn't even start writing until she was 29!

Whatever you choose, don't let age or lack of experience deter you. Your main objective should be to enjoy yourself and expand your capacity to learn. You're bound to have a good time – and you just may discover a talent you never knew you had!
