The art of relaxation
There's more to relaxing than vegging in front of the TV. When you transform relaxation into a true wellness moment, you help your body recover from the stress of your hectic life. All it takes is a touch of atmosphere or even a little activity.
Escape to your own private sanctuary
To create an atmosphere for wellness, you need to tune out the usual distractions. First things first: Dim the lights. Turn off the phone. And shut down your computer. Smell is a powerful catalyst for emotions, so light a vanilla- or lavender-scented candle. These potent fragrances are known for their relaxing properties. Feel free to try other soothing aromas such as chamomile, rose, sandalwood, and geranium.
Next, put on some calm, melodic music. Soothing music and sounds – whether natural or man-made – have traditionally served to enhance relaxation and meditation.
And last, but not least, snuggle up on the couch with a steaming cup of herbal tea. Soothing teas to try include: passionflower, mango, roseberry, and especially chamomile. Empty your mind, sip your tea, and feel the weight of the day slide off your shoulders!
Get active and relax
Did you know you can ease tensions by engaging in physical activity? It's true. Studies suggest that physically active people have less anxiety and are less prone to depression than those who are more sedentary.
You don't have to join a gym to enjoy active relaxation. Simply go for a walk, a hike or a bike ride when you want to feel more balanced. Or consider trying yoga – it's both a complete workout and a stress reliever.
- Another way to actively relax is to start a hobby. Find a regular time and place to practice your hobby, and give your brain a break from everyday tension. For example, you could:
- Take piano or guitar lessons. Start slowly and let the music soothe your spirit.
- Go back to school to learn something you've always been curious about.
- Make something. Beadwork, crocheting, knitting and other handcrafts keep you busy and give you the creative satisfaction of making something you can enjoy.
- Chart your family tree. Genealogy is educational and you might find some cousins you never knew you had!
Remember, whatever activity you choose, you'll get the best results from something that engages both your body and your mind.
